Between This World & The Next was written for Nelson Pardo, a Tuba Performance
graduate of East Carolina University and a studiomate of mine. This piece portrays the
journey that he and many others have experienced when transitioning from being a student to becoming a professional. The work starts as most musician started their careers, cheery and optimistic. It then progresses to a section of self-reflection, showing the doubt in one’s abilities that inevitably happens in everyone’s profession. After this period of uncertainty and insecurity, the piece begins to recall those feelings of joy and optimism that were so prominent when it began. Now, with restored confidence and the experience that the journey has provided, the music becomes a bit more laid-back. It still maintains the level of difficulty that is expected from an experienced performer’s music, but now there is a newfound composure and “seasoned swagger” along with it. The piece ends with strength and confidence, starting a new chapter of life in this new world of professionalism.
