Ex Machina. (2019)

This piece was commissioned by the East Carolina University Tuba Euphonium Ensemble. The title is derived from the phrase “Deus ex machina,” meaning “God in the machine.” The motion and overall effect of the piece is dependent on each player/group of players successfully executing their written parts, just as a large machine’s performance is dependent on each individual part inside of it. Ex Machina., roughly translating to “The Machine,” can be performed with one player to a part, or by a larger Tuba Euphonium ensemble.
